Data Tools for Antibiotic Resistance in the Clinical Setting

Through Citizen Science

Data tools and citizen science are where Petrified Bugs began. Our first volunteer-led initiative launched in 2023 with the creation of the Antibiotic Breakpoint Explorer (ABE) — a free web-based tool that helps clinicians, researchers, laboratorians, and educators better understand the interpretive criteria used to determine whether antibiotics are clinically effective.

This work was presented at IDWeek 2024 and sparked ongoing interest in using citizen science to support antimicrobial resistance (AMR) efforts.

Thanks to the success of ABE, we expanded into a dedicated platform: AntibioticTools.org — built to meet the educational and data needs of those working with antibiotic breakpoints in clinical practice, education and research. We're planning many more tools, visualizations, and collaborative content — and we'd love your help!
